Network Terminology Part 2

For those of you who want to know more about technology, or just have a basic understanding of what some of the terms are, here’s an addition to the first list of Tech Terms provided below. If you haven’t already, please reference “Network Terminology Part 1

Connection: Data exchange using over a network. A data exchange might be things such as emails, looking up information.

Packet: Container of information, carried in bits over a network

Network Interface: Software interface to networking hardware.

Protocol: Procedure that defines the way devices correspond

Port: Not physical, instead, it’s an address that is linked to a part of the software, allowing the server to talk to multiple applications.

Firewall: Software that filters through incoming and outgoing traffic to your server with predetermined criteria.

Router: Physical device that allows traffic to traverse from local devices to the internet and back.

Modem (Modulator): Physical device that provides connection the internet through a router, computer, or switch.

Switch: Device for networking numerous computers together.

Server: Computer that administers data to more computers.
